St. Peters Burials Granton

St. Peter’s Church South
Bridgewater
Extracts of burials 1847-1912

The story of the forgotten St. Peters Church of South Bridgewater.

From information received about a headstone in a paddock in Granton (south of Bridgewater) a friend and I went looking for it. We did not find it until a fortnight later.

This paddock was part of William Mansfield’s land grant. Mansfield was convicted and tried at Somerset on the 1st April 1802 for highway robbery and sent to VDL with a life sentence. He arrived on the Calcutta with Lt. Collins to Port Phillip and later came to the Derwent River on the Ocean in 1804. In 1818 Mansfield received an absolute pardon, and the year was granted 30 acres of land at Glenorchy from Gov. Macquarie. He later took out a grazing licence at the Black Snake Run.

In the infancy of the Colony this area was under the Parish of O’Brien’s Bridge.  The Rev. John Yarker who had been recruited in England arrived a Chaplain in 1846 and was pastor there until he was transferred to Launceston in 1848.

William Mansfield gave a portion (2 roods) of his land for the purpose of erecting a Chapel, to the Church of England. (Known later as St. Peters.

Further provisions of the agreement with William Mansfield included an area to be set aside in the Chapel for a pew for his family, heirs and successors, and an area be set aside in the churchyard for a vault for his family.

The vault is no longer there but it would be interesting to know if it was removed to another cemetery.  The wrought iron fence is still in place in good condition.  (it was, when last I saw it) The only headstone left, lays face up in the corner of the block, it belonged to Richard Rayne, a convict who arrived on the Surrey in 1819.

Richard Rayner

Died 8 August 1870

Aged 71 years.

The Chapel of St. Peters was licensed in December 1846 and appears to have been in use for many years as a church and a school.

Searching for information (this was only supposed to be a small project about who had been buried in St. Peters Cemetery)  At first there appeared to be no known list.

With the help of the Archives one was finally found under St. Peters, Bridgewater.  There were 31 burials and on attempting to trace the first 10 names it was found that they were registered.  The Church list although hard to read, was copied out, hopefully not too many names are incorrectly spelt.
