Early settlers up to 1832 and their land grants New Town to Bridgewater.

Some of this land was granted as early as 1804 to thosewho arrived with Lt. Gov. Collins. In 1808 when the Norfolk Islanders arrived they too received small grants to replace those that they had left behind. Names like Berrisford; Risby; Mortimer; Jillett etc.
From then until 1832 the remainder was granted or sold to other settlers. It is interesting to see some of the women whose names were on the map. Mary Peters; Margaret Wishart; Elizabeth Green, and Martha Hayes who had arrived in the Derwent in 1803 with Lt. Bowen. She took up the land and ran the farm herself.
One of the most interesting things to come to light when this map was found, was the land on which the Queen's Orphanage was built c1830. The outline of the building is clearly shown on the map. What was not known was that the original land was granted to William Nichols who had arrived with Collins in 1804. His land was always thought to be somewhere along the Derwent River (but never found) Some of those early grants were described at being on the River Derwent but were really along the Rivulets.
William Nichols was living on his 100 acres in 1809. He had 9 acres in wheat under cultivation, 4 cattle, 39 sheep, 19 goats and 2 swine. His grant was taken over by the Government, and Nichols moved with his family Clarence Plains.

William Nichols - One hundred acres lying and situated on the River Derwent Van Diemen's Land, bounded on the East by Henrietta's Farm, West and South by unallotted ground and North by the River (Rivulet) to be called Whitechurch farm - Quit rent, Two shillings and sixpence after 5 yrs and as the design etc. to consent.

There were seven major rivulets running into the River Derwent between New Town and Bridgewater (some now only run when it rains) and I have divided the land and names between the rivulets. This way it is easier to distinguish them.
